About the event
Colonel John Pickerings Regiment invites you to a relaxed Living History event at The Ramsey Neighbourhood Trust annual Heritage Day. Ramsey is a small, but historically important Fenland town. Within the scope of our period of interest there was a nationally notorious witch trial, ‘The Witches of Warboys’ which James 1st became involved in and of course just a few miles down the road in Huntingdon we find our Lord Protector. The Oliver Cromwell we all know had an uncle, Sir Oliver Cromwell, he however was a staunch Royalist. Sir Oliver was the former owner of the very grand Hinchingbrooke House but had been forced to sell it due to massive debts incurred through entertaining James 1st. Sir Oliver moved to Ramsey Abbey and not long after the war broke out, he did receive a visit from his nephew. Oliver the younger arrived with members of his Regiment and demanded money and valuables of his uncle to aid Parliament's Cause, Sir Oliver was having none of it so Oliver Cromwell the younger threatened to burn down the Abbey, that seemed to do the trick.
The event is 11am to 4pm and LH is in a beautiful location on ‘The Green’ which is in front of Ramsey Abbey’s gatehouse, a National Trust property, adjacent to St Thomas a Becket's Church.
