Castle Bromwich
Living History and Display
19th - 20th April
Rest, Recuperate and Recruit
Pickering's and friends celebrate Easter with a Living history extravaganza in the West Midlands with a large encampment, cameos and drill displays. The kids have not been forgotten with interactive activities, kiddie pike drills and even an easter egg hunt!

Colonel John Pickering's Regiment of Foote extends a warm and enthusiastic welcome to all visitors as we return to the enchanting Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens for an Easter experience that promises to be far more delightful and engaging than any ordinary bunny-shaped chocolate treat. Over the course of two exciting days, we will be immersing ourselves in the rich history of the English Civil Wars by portraying a Parliamentarian regiment that is taking a much-needed pause to rest, recuperate, and engage in the vital task of recruiting new soldiers. This event is particularly significant as it leads up to one of the lesser-known yet pivotal skirmishes of the era—the Battle of Curdworth Bridge, which is recognized as one of the earliest confrontations between the Parliamentarian and Royalist forces in August 1642. This battle marks a crucial moment in the unfolding narrative of the English Civil Wars, and we are thrilled to bring this historical context to life for our guests.
As you wander through the beautifully landscaped gardens, you will encounter a vibrant and extensive living history display that captures the essence of 17th-century life. The atmosphere will be alive with the sights and sounds of the era, featuring skilled artisans engaged in traditional crafts, the enticing aromas of period cooking wafting through the air, and soldiers performing various activities that depict their daily lives and duties. Expect to see a variety of cameos that showcase the diverse experiences of soldiers and civilians alike during this tumultuous period in English history. In addition, we will host two informative displays of arms in the arena, where our knowledgeable reenactors will provide detailed explanations of the weaponry used during the Civil Wars, including demonstrations of how these weapons were operated and the tactics employed on the battlefield at the time. This interactive experience is designed to educate and entertain, offering insights into the military strategies and technologies that shaped the conflict.
